Joan I. Cunningham, age 89 died July 15, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, in Titusville, NJ. Born in North Plainfield, she lived in New Jersey all her life.
The daughter of the late Edward and Catherine Kellegher Jonas, predeceased by her brother Carlton (Sonny) Jonas.
Joan was a registered nurse, graduating from St. Peter’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She spent her career in the medical field working at Foothill Acres Nursing Home, Hunterdon Medical Center, and finally at North Princeton Developmental Center where she spent 25 years.
She retired in 1998 at the age of 70, from North Princeton Developmental Center leaving her position of Administrative director of resident Living.
After her retirement, she spent a few years working part time at the Hopewell Family Practice for one of her favorite physicians, Dr. Ron Grossman. She loved to talk about how Dr. Grossman was one of the interns she worked with at the Hunterdon Medical Center.
Although her nursing career was important to her, most important was her family. At family gatherings, she loved to look around the room and say, “look what I started” referring to her four children, 10 grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She loved to share stories and sing the praises of all her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Terrence Cunningham (Gail) of Harrisonburg VA, Timothy Cunningham (Cathy) of Surfside Beach, SC, Beverly McHale (Patrick) of McKinney TX, and Nancy Guggenheim (Jim) of Titusville NJ, ten grandchildren Timothy Cunningham (Allison), Kelly Lynch, Jennifer Cunningham, Kathy Roark (Ross), Diane Lancor (Kevin), Kaitlynn Neal (Craig), William Cunningham, Jessica Letteney (Pete), Michael Guggenheim, and Kristen McHale and twelve great grandchildren Caleb, Nathan, Hunter, Harper, Trevor, Drew, Emma, Nora, Keegan, Vivienne, Eli and Max.
Visitation will be held 12(Noon)-1:00PM Saturday July 21, 2018 at the Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 N. Main St. Pennington, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30PM at St. James Chapel, Pennington, NJ.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the Abrams Assisted Living, 50 Walter Street, Ewing NJ where she resided for three years under the care of dedicated staff, prior to going on hospice care at her daughter’s home. http://www.greenwoodhouse.org/
