Garnet Charles Johnston, 97, of Pennington entered into God's care, Friday August 18, 2023 at Brandywine Senior Living with his son and daughter-in-law at his side. He was born and raised in Buffalo, NY where he resided for 45 years before living in Greensboro, NC for a brief 3 years. Mr. Johnston then resided in Richmond, VA for 38 years and for the last 11 years in Pennington, NJ.
Garnet was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Florence (Duthie) Johnston; a son, David Johnston, and a daughter, Patricia Steffan; and his wife Dr. Shirley Jane (Heary) Johnston. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary Johnston and Linda Flower; a sister, Shirley Klein; 9 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Garnet was a veteran who honorably served with the United States Navy in World War II and the Korean Conflict. In between wars, he took advantage of the G. I. Bill to earn a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from Clarkson University. While attending college, he also supported a wife and child, and played two years on the varsity ice hockey team. In addition to being a brilliant student, he was also an excellent athlete. He played ice hockey, baseball, and softball when he was young. As he aged, he became an avid bowler and golfer, winning many awards. Mr. Johnston was an electrical engineer with Dupont, Sylvania and AT&T, retiring in 1988. After retirement he enjoyed fishing in Canada and playing golf. He and his wife Shirley enjoyed vacationing in Bermuda and the Florida Keys. They were both members of Hermitage Country Club in Henrico, VA for over 30 years.
A memorial Service will be held September 9, 2023 at 11:00AM at Blackwell Memorial Home, 21 North Main St., Pennington, NJ. Burial of cremains will take place in Cheektowaga, NY at the Mount Calvary Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held on September 30, 2023 at 11:00AM at the chapel in the cemetery. Prior to the service, guests are requested to meet at the parking lot of the cemetery located at 800 Pine Ridge Heritage Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14225.
